About Fay
Fay Young is an upholstery teacher based in Ealing, West London, dedicated to sharing traditional skills and helping others learn the craft of upholstery in a practical, hands-on way.
Originally trained in fashion design at the University of East London, Fay began her career working within the fashion industry in a design role. With a strong foundation in sewing, materials and construction, she later moved into upholstery, drawn to the process of making and restoring furniture by hand.
Fay trained in traditional upholstery techniques before going on to work on a range of projects across West London. Over time, her focus naturally shifted towards teaching, where she found a real passion for guiding others through the process and building their confidence with practical skills.
In 2019, Fay founded Makers Station in Brentford, a co-working creative space that brought together designers, makers and artists. This experience strengthened her belief in shared learning and creative community, values that continue to shape her teaching today.
Fay was taught by Kathy, who previously ran the upholstery course at Hanwell Community Centre, a course with a history spanning over 50 years. Fay has since taken on the course and now runs it independently, continuing its legacy while welcoming a new generation of students.
Her classes are rooted in traditional techniques, taught in a relaxed and supportive environment, with an emphasis on understanding the process, working with your hands, and creating pieces to be proud of.
